How Do Lighting Manufacturers Win Specifications in 2027? Ten Research-Backed Findings.

Lighting Marketing — W.Bradford

Architecture billings have contracted for 43 straight months, the longest run in the index’s history. New research on where specifications are actually won, and lost, in a flat market.

Lighting Marketing · 5 min read

Commercial and architectural lighting enters 2027 with a flat forecast, a repriced cost basis, and a buying process that has quietly changed hands.

W.Bradford spent March through July 2026 documenting what that means for the way this industry wins work: a structured survey of eleven executives across manufacturing, rep agencies, and lighting technology, more than twenty-five hours of recorded field interviews, and the institutional research base of the Ehrenberg-Bass Institute, Binet and Field, and Bain and Google. The findings became Specified or Forgotten, our first industry report.

Here is what every lighting sales and marketing leader should take into planning season.

01

What is the state of the commercial lighting market heading into 2027?

The AIA/Deltek Architecture Billings Index, the leading indicator for lighting demand, has been in contraction for 43 consecutive months, the longest run in the index’s history, and its July 2026 reading was 46.6. At midyear the AIA Consensus Construction Forecast Panel cut its 2026 outlook from a 1.0 percent increase to a 0.3 percent decline, then raised 2027 from 2.2 percent to 3.0 percent. Read the sector detail before reading that as a recovery. Net of data centers, commercial spending is projected to decline 1 percent this year and grow only 1 percent next. Data centers carry the growth in both years, forecast at 33 percent in 2026 and 25 percent in 2027, while manufacturing construction was cut to an 11.6 percent decline.

The conclusion for planning: the cavalry arriving in 2027 is headed to data centers. For everyone else the market stays flat, which makes share the only growth available, and share moves fastest when the market is flat because that is when most competitors go quiet. 2027 is a positioning year, not a recovery year.

02

When do specifiers actually choose a lighting brand?

Earlier than almost any lighting marketing budget assumes. The Ehrenberg-Bass Institute’s 95-5 rule holds that roughly 95 percent of a category’s future buyers are out of market at any given moment, forming brand opinions with no project on the table. Bain and Google’s study of more than 1,200 B2B buyers found eighty to ninety percent held a shortlist before doing any research at all, and about ninety percent bought from that original list.

Architects and engineers behave exactly as this research predicts: professionally conservative, loyal to products they have used and reps who answer. The shortlist is written between projects. Marketing that arrives mid-project arrives after the decision.

03

How should lighting manufacturers split brand and activation budgets?

Binet and Field’s B2B effectiveness research puts the optimal split near 46 percent brand building and 54 percent activation. Most lighting manufacturers run closer to 20/80, and some run 10/90, because activation is measurable this quarter while brand pays over five years.

The downstream effects are documented: rising cost of acquisition, weaker pricing power, and negotiations that start from zero because the brand brought no memory into the room. The correction is a deliberate rebalance over eighteen months, with brand investment concentrated on specification influence rather than unfocused awareness.

04

What replaces “energy efficient” as a lighting brand position?

Nothing, because it was never a position; it is now the entry fee. When every fixture on the schedule clears the same efficacy bar, the claims that move a specification live one level up: what the efficiency buys, what the system does, how the space performs on day 3,000.

Outcome framing also survives value engineering, because it gives the designer, the rep, and the contractor a story each can defend when the substitution request lands. Products sold on first cost get exposed the moment the cost basis shifts, and the cost basis has moved three times in eighteen months.

05

How is AI changing lighting specification?

Early-stage product research is moving into answer engines and AI assistants that read manufacturer product data whether or not it was prepared to be read. Brands with structured, accurate, machine-readable data get surfaced; the rest go invisible in a channel they cannot see.

The field adds two corrections to the hype. Specifiers value accuracy over speed and are adopting firm by firm, entire studios at a time. And visibly AI-generated content damages the trust specification runs on, so the discipline is AI in the stack, never in the face.

06

Where is the open opportunity in the category?

Controls education. Ask the channel who does networked controls and DMX well and the answer is close to unanimous: nobody, including the brands that claim to. Complexity, margin, and failure modes keep migrating into controls, yet no commercial or architectural manufacturer owns protocol literacy the way it has been owned in theatrical lighting.

The first brand to become the channel’s controls educator converts a technical capability into a specification advantage that compounds for a decade.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 95-5 rule in B2B marketing?

Research from the Ehrenberg-Bass Institute and the LinkedIn B2B Institute showing that about 95 percent of category buyers are not in market at any given time, so advertising works mainly by building memory with future buyers rather than converting current ones.

Is the Architecture Billings Index a reliable indicator for lighting demand?

Yes. The ABI leads nonresidential construction activity by roughly nine to twelve months, which makes it the standard leading indicator for commercial lighting demand. It has been in contraction since January 2023, the longest run in the index’s history, and its July 2026 reading was 46.6.

What is the Specification Visibility Diagnostic?

A focused W.Bradford assessment of how a lighting brand performs across the moments that decide the shortlist: specifier awareness, AI-channel visibility, rep enablement, and value-engineering survivability. A limited number are conducted each quarter, complimentary for lighting executives.
